Why Rationale exists
Every engineering organization runs on decisions - which database, which architecture, which tradeoff to accept. The decisions themselves usually survive: in an RFC, a ticket, a wiki page. What doesn't survive is the reasoning. The alternatives that were weighed, the evidence that tipped the scale, the assumptions everyone shared at the time - that context lives in people's heads, and it leaves when they do.
The result is a tax every growing team pays: new engineers spend months reconstructing history one conversation at a time, settled questions get relitigated because nobody can say why they were settled, and organizations quietly repeat expensive mistakes they had already learned from once.
What we're building
Rationale is organizational memory infrastructure. It reads the artifacts your team already produces and maintains a Decision Map - every significant decision connected to its evidence, tradeoffs, alternatives, and whatever superseded it. Not a search engine over documents; a system of record for reasoning, kept current as the organization changes.
We think this matters more every year. AI assistants are making answers cheap - but an assistant is only as good as the memory it draws on. The durable advantage won't be the model everyone has; it will be the years of curated organizational context no model can reconstruct on demand.
We're building for engineering teams first - but decisions, evidence, and tradeoffs aren't an engineering phenomenon. Legal, finance, product, and operations teams lose the same context the same way, and the model underneath Rationale is domain-agnostic. We start with engineering because the pain is sharpest there and the artifacts are richest.
Who's behind it
Rationale is built by Rationale LLC, an independent, founder-run company. It was started by a software engineer who spent enough years watching teams lose the why behind their own decisions - to turnover, reorgs, and time - to decide the problem deserved real infrastructure. The product is currently in early access.
That stage cuts both ways, so we're candid about it: you get a direct line to the person building the product, and your feedback shapes it - and in exchange we ask for the patience early products need. What we will not compromise on is the posture your knowledge deserves: your content is never used to train AI models, every answer traces to its source, and you can disconnect a source - or have a person's data erased - at any time.
